A collaboration between Pembrokeshire County Council Sports Development Department, Pembrokeshire Secondary schools and Pembrokeshire Weightlifting is making an impressive impact to local sport and community sport.

A Pembrokeshire schools, inclusive weightlifting project is strengthened by a Local Authority Partnership Agreement funded programme, which has trained volunteers and PE staff to run clubs in a number of schools throughout the county.

The hard work and commitment by a group of dedicated volunteers located in Pembrokeshire is opening up participation to a previously male dominated sport and introducing weightlifting to the younger generation, especially females and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Funding from both Local Giving and Sport Wales has been used to educate Pembrokeshire Weightlifting Volunteers.

On the 9th November, all those involved in the schools project, met a Ysgol Milford Haven to compete in the Pembrokeshire Schools Weightlifting Championships. In it’s third year running this event continued to demonstrate high participation rates, in a supportive and friendly environment, with many students gaining personal achievements and confidence in a sport which they enjoy. There was great support from parents, teachers and volunteer coaches, creating an atmosphere to inspire lifelong involvement in sport.

The Pembrokeshire School Championships is a one of a kind in Wales. There is no other Local Authority or county based programme or pathway such as this throughout Wales.
