We are delighted that four club members represented Wales at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Nathan Stephens – Para Powerlifting athlete. Jim Horner – Para Powerlifting coach. Simon Roach – Team Manager. Stephen Donovan – Technical Official
Nathan Stephens has become a name synonymous with Paralympic sport in Wales. He is a former world record holder and World Champion in the F57 javelin. He is also a three-time Paralympian, competing in sledge hockey at the 2006 Winter Games, in discus, shot and javelin in 2008 and in javelin at London 2012. But while Nathan has been a firm fixture in GB vests, Gold Coast was the first time he had competed for Wales at a Commonwealth Games.
He has only been powerlifting since January 2017 but has made fantastic progress through the past year. At Gold Coast, Nathan competed in the light weight devision and lifted an impressive 140kg. In his previous and first International event, held in Hungary he lifted 120kg!
Nathan suffered horrific injuries when he was struck by a train on his ninth birthday. He has since championed disability sport and helped to raise its profile. Now working for Disability Sport Wales as a Talent Officer, he has even appeared on a one-off Sport Relief Strictly Come Dancing special.
Please contact our coaching staff at SAW to try this great sport, all welcome
