Parkinson’s Strength Group at Strength Academy Wales

At Strength Academy Wales, we believe that fitness is for everyone, no matter their background, ability, or health challenges. Our Parkinson’s Strength Group, funded by Parkinson’s UK, is a shining example of how strength training can be a powerful tool — not just for physical improvement, but for building a strong, supportive community.

Created by our lead volunteer Simon Roach, this programme offers two dedicated strength training sessions per week designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s. These sessions go beyond exercise—they create a welcoming space where participants can improve their health, regain confidence, and connect with others on a similar journey.

Sessions take place every Monday and Friday at 10:30 AM at Strength Academy Wales.

More Than Just Exercise – A Supportive Community

Our Parkinson’s Strength Group is about more than lifting weights — it’s about lifting each other up. Participants experience improvements in strength, balance, mobility, and coordination, which are all key to maintaining independence and quality of life. However, the benefits extend beyond physical health. Many attendees describe the group as a lifeline, providing social interaction, friendship, and a sense of belonging.

A participant of the group shared their personal experience:

“I have been attending strength training sessions at Strength Academy Wales since December 2024. I was quite nervous before my first session, but from the moment I walked through the door, I was made to feel completely at ease. The coaches and volunteers are incredibly supportive, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. These sessions have been truly beneficial—my strength and stability have improved, and I’ve had the chance to connect with others in the group, even making a few new friends. Each week, I genuinely look forward to attending these club-like sessions. It’s a fantastic programme, and I’m so grateful to Parkinson’s UK for making it possible.”

For many, the benefits of the programme extend far beyond the gym. Improved strength and stability help with everyday activities. The camaraderie formed within the group creates a support network where participants can share experiences and encourage one another.

A Personal Mission

For Simon Roach, lead volunteer and head coach, this programme is particularly meaningful:

“The sessions are going extremely well, with strong attendance and great engagement. We actively promote them on social media, and one of our club members, a Parkinson’s nurse, is helping us spread the word locally, ensuring that more people living with Parkinson’s are aware of this opportunity. It’s been incredible to see how strength training is making a real difference — not just in physical health, but in confidence, independence, and overall wellbeing.

What’s truly special about this programme is the sense of community it creates. Participants come for the training but stay for the friendships, the support, and the motivation they give each other. The impact extends beyond the gym — it’s about improving everyday life.

Not only do the participants benefit, but our coaches and volunteers also find great value in being part of the Parkinson’s Strength Group. Coaching people with Parkinson’s has been a learning experience for all of us, reinforcing the importance of tailored exercise and the power of a positive, encouraging environment. Seeing the progress and hearing the feedback from members makes this one of the most rewarding programmes we’ve ever run.

Out of all the community programmes we deliver, this one is particularly close to my heart. My father suffered from Parkinson’s, and I saw firsthand how strength training at home helped him maintain his mobility and independence for longer. To now be able to offer a structured, supportive programme for others in the Parkinson’s community is incredibly meaningful to me. Knowing that we are helping people stay active, build strength, and connect with others makes this work truly fulfilling”

This deep personal connection has been a driving force behind the programme’s continued success and expansion.
